Dressed in bright red, Beverly Aikins stood proudly at the forefront as her son, Vance, took the oath of office, becoming one of the youngest vice presidents in U.S. history.

While Vance was sworn in, Aikins stood nearby, caring for her grandchildren. Before the ceremony, Aikins was seen laughing with Donald Trump Jr. while seated in front of billionaires Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos.

Aikins recently shared that she is recovering from surgery, but nothing was going to prevent her from attending Monday’s inauguration. She expressed her feelings on Facebook saying:

“My recovery is slow, but I have an inauguration to attend on January 20. Nothing will stop me from being there. My baby is being inaugurated as our next Vice President.”

Furthermore, Vance’s mother attended Ohio’s inaugural ball on Sunday night, expressing how proud she is of her son.

A Troubled Past: Vance and Aikins’ Journey

In 2016 Vance opened up about his difficult childhood and his mother Aikins’ battles with drug and alcohol addiction. The memoir was later turned into a movie, with Amy Adams playing the role of Aikins.

During the Republican National Convention in July, JD Vance honored his mother. He expressed pride in her presence and acknowledged that it was because of her that he had been sober and clean for 10 years. Furthermore, he added I love you, Mom.

As a reaction, she stood up with tears in her eyes and the crowd backed her with cheers.

JD spent his childhood in a Rust Belt town in Ohio, where his father left the family when he was a toddler. His parents later divorced.

He wrote that his father gave him up for adoption when he was six. Vance was adopted by Bob Hamel, his mother’s third husband out of five. According to the memoir, Aikins later struggled with substance abuse.

Vance’s mother shared with The New York Times that her addiction started one day at work when she took a Vicodin to relieve a headache. She enjoyed the feeling it gave her, and shortly after, she began stealing Percocet and other stronger painkillers.

She eventually lost her job, nursing license, and access to prescription drugs, leading her to turn to heroin. She told a media channel that: “My brain loved it.”

Vance recalled a particularly traumatic experience from this time in his life. He described being in the car with his mother when she sped up to what felt like a hundred miles per hour and threatened to crash the car, saying she would kill them both, as he detailed in his memoir.

She eventually slowed down but then turned around and allegedly hit him in the backseat of the car. Vance said he jumped out and ran to a neighbor’s house, where the police were called.

A New Beginning and Reconciliation

After that, his grandparents took him in, and he adopted their last name, which he now carries. In 2015, Aikins hit rock bottom, living out of her car.

However, she checked into a sober living facility in Covington, Kentucky. After a challenging decade, Vance and his mother have reconciled and now share a close relationship.

At the RNC last summer, Vance said,

“My fellow Americans, this moment isn’t about me; it’s about all of us and who we’re fighting for. It’s about single moms like mine, who faced financial struggles and addiction but never gave up.”
