Usha Vance’s Parents: Background and Heritage

Radhakrishna in short Krish Chilukuri and Lakshmi Chilukuri are Usha Vaance’s parents. They immigrated from India in the late 1970s. Their family is originally from a village called Vadduru in Andhra Pradesh state.

However, in 1959, they relocated to Chennai when Usha Vance’s paternal grandfather, Ramasastry Chilukuri, began teaching physics at IIT. The institute now honors his legacy with a student award in his memory.

Usha and her sister were brought up in a Hindu household by their parents, Krish and Lakshmi. Usha shared in an interview:

“I grew up in a religious home. My parents are Hindu, and their faith made them wonderful parents and truly good people. I’ve witnessed the strength and influence of that.”

Both of Usha’s parents are professors. Her mother, Dr. Lakshmi Chilukuri, teaches in the Molecular Biology department at UC San Diego and has served as the Provost of Sixth College since 2018. In a letter to students, she humorously signed off as “Provost Chill/Dr. C/Provost Chilukuri.”

Usha Vance’s Mother: A Distinguished Educator

UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla described Professor Lakshmi Chilukuri as an innovative and dynamic educator with expertise in evidence-based teaching methods. In an interview, he stated that develops the microbiology teaching lab curriculum, trains instructional assistants, and mentors adjunct faculty.

Dr. Lakshmi Chilukuri currently serves as the Coordinator of the Undergraduate Microbiology Teaching Laboratory in the Division of Biological Sciences.

Furthermore, UC San Diego Chancellor said that:

“She has a demonstrated record of commitment to undergraduate education, equity, and diversity. She is one of the founding members of the pilot course in Race, Ethnicity, and Gender in Biology and Medicine, exploring the practice and philosophy of science from a multicultural perspective, the historical use and misuse of science in biomedical research and social policies, and issues of race and medicine in a post-genomic age.”

Usha Vance’s mother has actively promoted diversity and student success within the Division of Biological Sciences. She is also a member of the Division’s Diversity Committee and served as a Marshall Mentor from 2008 to 2010.

The chancellor praised her career saying:

“With a commitment to student success and training in critical, analytical, and quantitative thinking, Professor Chilukuri has served on numerous college and divisional committees.”

He concluded the interview saying:

“In her role as Provost, Professor Chilukuri will not only oversee and guide the college in its present configuration, but will also help Sixth College evolve new partnerships and aspirations related to its future move to the North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Community Neighborhood. We are delighted to have her at the helm during this exciting time.

Usha Vance’s Father: A Professor in Aerospace Engineering

Usha Vance’s father, Dr. Krish Chilukuri, is also a professor at the San Diego State University. He teaches in the Department of Aerospace Engineering.
