How Did David Bowie Met Iman?
Teddy, a hairdresser, and one of Bowie’s closest friends was responsible for the marriage of Iman and David. Teddy believes that although David was at the height of his worldwide fame, there was one thing missing from his life, LOVE. This is when he decided to find someone for Bowie. After a few months, Teddy met the famous supermodel Iman and decided that she was the one for David.
A plan was formed and Teddy begged David to fly to LA from New York for his special birthday party. Meanwhile, he also asked Iman to come to his birthday and she never suspected any hint of a meeting with Bowie. Teddy has recalled this meeting, and he described the entrance of both the superstars as follows:
David arrived in a white Mustang sports car, wearing white jeans and a white jacket, all denim. Iman showed up in a black Mercedes wearing all-black leather. And I thought, what could be more perfect?
When Iman entered the room, everyone’s attention went towards her. It was as if she was the only one visible to every person in the room. This is when both David Bowie and Iman laid eyes on each other. They both smiled and the rest was history. Teddy stated:
She had a big smile and she and David looked at each other and it was love at first sight, you could feel the electricity, something went off.
Both the superstars spent the rest of the evening talking with each other. It looked as if both of them could not lay their eyes off of each other. Both of them got engaged with each other after a few months.
Road To Marriage
According to Teddy, he once had a talk with Iman about whether David asked him to marry. She said Bowie asked her, but she rejected him. She first wanted David to meet her family and tell them more. Iman also said that she has not met David’s family yet. Teddy stated:
Iman didn’t really turn him down but just didn’t want to say yes. She was like hold on we’ve got to meet some people first, you’re not just marrying me, you’re marrying my tribe, my family.
However, this did not stop David from proposing again. This time, the outcome was different, and Iman said yes. David proposed to her on his yacht and gave her a 15-carat ring which was sapphire rounded with diamonds. Teddy stated:
David took her out to the Adriatic Sea and proposed in the Bosphorus Strait on his yacht – so very romantic. He gave her this beautiful, I don’t know how many carats, like a 15-carat ring, a beautiful star sapphire surrounded with diamonds. And then she got a yellow canary diamond ring, so she had two engagement rings, and the canary was like 14 carats and was stunning.
Wedding Ceremony
The couple held their official wedding ceremony at Lausanne City Hall in Switzerland on 24 April 1992. This was a private function which was attended by only relatives and close friends of the couple. It was followed by a grand wedding in Tuscan Vila, Italy on 6 June 1992.
Many celebrities from around the world attended this event including the fashion designer Valentino. Teddy did the hair for both of them during the wedding. David also vowed to change his drinking habit, and he really did it for Iman. After the death of Bowie, Iman said:
I will never remarry. I do feel very lonely. But do I want a relationship? I can’t say never, but no, not now.
