2024, much to everyone’s shock and misery, saw the death of many notable celebrities including the famous singer, Liam Payne and former US president, Jimmy Carter. Among other celebrities who unfortunately passed away the same year include O.J. Simpson, director Charles Shyer, model Dayle Haddon, and the ‘Romeo and Juliet’ actor Olivia Eisley.
Former President Jimmy Carter’s death
Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the US passed away on Dec 29th, 2024 aged 100. Carter was the longest-lived President who after spending around 2 years under hospital care, unfortunately succumbed to his diseases. According to his family, he died peacefully at his home in Georgia, surrounded by his beloved wife and children.
His death prompted reactions from notable people around the world including the President at the time, Joe Biden. Biden referred to Carter as an “extraordinary leader.” He also praised his humanitarian work and his advocacy for human and civil rights. In a statement about Carter, Biden called him, “a man of principle and faith.”
Among Carter’s most notable accomplishments are his foreign policy agreements, the Panama Canal Treaty, and his effective diplomacy with China. He is also praised for his national energy policy that conserved energy at a massive level.
Carter’s humanitarian work post-presidency earned him the Nobel Peace Award in 2002.
Liam Payne’s death
Liam Payne’s death announcement on October 16, 2024, sent shockwaves amongst the music community. Payne, aged 31, died after falling off the third floor of the hotel he was staying at in Argentina. After a detailed autopsy, the official cause of death was announced to be “polytrauma”. It was later revealed that police were called to the hotel moments before his death to aid regarding an “aggressive man.” It was further reported to the officials that the person was “under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
Payne had originally arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina to attend the concert of his former One Direction bandmate, Niall Horan. After the concert, he then decided to extend his stay in the country while his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy left just a few days prior to his death.
An investigation into Payne’s death revealed troublesome events leading up to his death. CCTV footage released to the public shows Liam Payne extremely intoxicated. Payne was under the consumption of some substances and according to official court documents, he was “unable to stand.” the CCTV footage shows three people, one of whom was the receptionist, “dragging” Payne back to his room.
More details emerged as part of the investigation. It was revealed that Payne repeatedly asked for drugs and alcohol during his stay. One theory surrounding his death states that the singer tried to escape his room through the balcony and unfortunately fell in the process as a result of his intoxicated state.
After an intensive investigation, two hotel employees, Ezequiel Pereyra and Braian Paiz are charged for selling cocaine to Payne. Furthermore, Argentina’s National Criminal Office representative revealed that the receptionist of the hotel, Esteban Grassi, and a “representative” of Payne, Roger Nores were also charged with “negligent homicide.” in total, 5 people were charged for Payne’s death; the 5th one being the hotel manager, Gilda Martin.
Olivia Hussey’s death
Olivia Hussey is famously known for her role as Juliet as she portrayed this character in “Romeo & Juliet”. This movie was produced in 1968. However, she passed away, unfortunately, on Dec 27, 2024. Hussey was 73 years old at the time of her death. She was described as “full of passion, love, and dedication to the arts” in a statement released by her family.
Dayle Haddon’s death
Dayle Haddon was a former supermodel and actress. She passed away on December 27 allegedly from carbon monoxide poisoning. Although the help arrived at Haddon’s house, but the emergency services found an unconscious man and a woman. After a thorough check-up, Haddon was pronounced deceased at the spot while the man was transferred to the hospital. The toxicology report for her death has not yet been released to the public.
OG Maco’s death
The popular rapper, OG Maco’s death was announced via his Instagram on December 27th, 2024. This came as shocking news that left his fans downhearted, His family’s statement celebrated his life that was a “testament to resilience, and love.” Although it is revealed that the rapper was hospitalized for weeks, the official cause of his death is not known.
OJ Simpson’s death
OJ Simpson was a former football star and a later Hollywood actor. He is most widely known for his involvement in what is known as “the trial of the century”. The former footballer star died on April 10th, 2024. His death was announced via X by his family who revealed that Simpson passed away after battling prostate cancer.
Simpson earned his name through football and acting but his fame grew tenfold after being accused of his wife, Nicole Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman’s brutal murder. The trial, which was telecasted on live TV, gained widespread attention and opened up debates regarding domestic violence, and police wrongdoings.
Although he was surprisingly acquitted of the charge, O.J then served 9 years behind bars after being held responsible for deaths in a civil case.
Linda Lavin’s death
The widely loved Broadway actress, Linda Lavin unexpectedly died on December 29th. Lavin was 87 at the time of her death. According to various sources, she unfortunately passed away after a sudden complication from the recently diagnosed lung cancer.
Charles Dolan’s death
HBO founder, Charles Dolan left for the eternal abode on December 28 at the age of 98. An official statement stated “natural causes” to be the reason for his death. The statement further read, “Dolan is survived by 6 children, 19 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.”
Dick Capri’s death
The famous comedian passed away on December 26th, 2024. According to his family, Capri died in his sleep after excessive internal bleeding from an enlarged aorta.
